In competitive tennis, the relationship between coach and player operates on a fundamental principle that many overlook: execution belongs to the player, while strategy and accountability rest with the coach. This division isn't just philosophical—it's the cornerstone of championship-level tennis.

During matches, players have one primary job: execute the techniques drilled in training and implement the specific match strategies their coach has prepared. The coach, meanwhile, bears responsibility for the outcome when these instructions are followed. After a loss, the most powerful words a coach can speak are: "We were beaten, and it's my job to find how we improve so that losses don't happen again."
Trust Through Instruction: The Selection Criteria That Matter
Throughout my coaching career, I've consistently selected teams based on a single, non-negotiable criterion: the player's ability to follow match instructions. This might seem basic, but at advanced competitive levels, it's revolutionary. Elite players cannot simultaneously navigate complex match dynamics and maintain peak performance—they need real-time guidance on tactical adjustments, and responding to that guidance is what separates professionals from amateurs.
The Thai National Team Standard
During my tenure training both the Thai men's and women's national teams, I implemented a crystal-clear policy that transformed our competitive culture. Before each tournament, I would address the entire squad with this message: "Players who follow instructions during matches will be selected for the next fixture. Those who don't or can't will be replaced by someone who can."
- Players focused entirely on execution rather than second-guessing strategy

The coach-player relationship in competitive tennis isn't about dominance or submission. It's about specialised roles that, when properly executed, create an unstoppable partnership. Coaches spend hours analysing opponents, crafting strategies, and identifying weaknesses. Players train their bodies and minds to implement these plans with precision.
Building Championship Culture Through Clear Expectations
Success in competitive tennis requires absolute clarity in roles and responsibilities. When players trust their coaches enough to follow instructions completely, and coaches accept full accountability for strategic decisions, magic happens. This philosophy doesn't just win matches—it builds champions who understand that elite tennis is ultimately a team sport played in singles format.
The message is simple: Follow the plan, and you'll play again. Abandon it, and someone else gets their chance.
